In just moments, one of Meg's friends, Paul, will be here to say goodbye to us as he heads off to college bright and early tomorrow morning. He is the first in a long line of goodbye's and well wishes for brilliant futures.
I am not ready to say goodbye to this amazing young man. He has been many things to Meg; a wonderful friend, handsome prom date, fun-to-be-around co-worker, and for a while, we had hoped something more to Meg , but alas, that's not something that will be happening.
Paul, I want you to know it's been a pleasure to welcome you into our home and our hearts. I've loved getting to know you via our sometimes raucous chats in the front room, several bonfires in which you, thankfully, were not injured when lighters were thrown into the fire and the ensuing explosion, nor were you seared when flaming marshmallows were tossed your way - a fact I imagine your folks are quite grateful for. Just the fact that you could sit around and take, let alone laugh at, our sometimes crass sense of humour and keep going with taunts of being Meg's first ex-husband, says a lot about you.
Through getting to know you, I have been privy to a peek into the soul of a gorgeous young man with the a most generous heart. You have been very respectful of my need to steer clear of people at times, and sent me wonderful messages via Facebook to remind me that not all humanity is as screwed up as I think it is.
G wished he could be here, but you know how it is, the work thing and all. G joins me in wishing all the very best for as you enter your college years. Enjoy these next four years and get as much out of it as you can.
Please know you are welcome to stop by any time whilst back home for holidays and visits. We are really going to miss your smile around here.
Paul, go kick some ass down in Syracuse!!
