We've all heard the saying, "There's an app for that!" about a million times since the introduction of smart phones including the Blackberry, iPhone and various Androids. Believe me, having an Android phone, there is indeed an app for that...whatever you could possibly be looking for, chances are, you'll find it out there.
Well, it seems as if the pedophiles in our society have have a new spokesperson who decided to write a book by claiming that it was his attempt to make "pedophile situations safer for those juveniles that find themselves involved in them, by establishing certian [sic] rules for these adults to follow," a product description reads. "I hope to achieve this by appealing to the better nature of pedosexuals, with hope that their doing so will result in less hatred and perhaps liter [sic] sentences should they ever be caught."
Philip Greaves, the author, published this e-book through Amazon's Kindle e-reader service. As soon as word hit the web I'm sure you can imagine some of the maelstrom that was stirred up as a result of this e-book being offered through one of America's biggest online retailers.
I initially found out about it early yesterday morning via an email forward and then when I logged onto Twitter it was immediately apparent that many people were up in arms over not only the content of the book, which is as close to a "How-To" book for pedophiles as you can get, but irate that Amazon would allow something like this to be sold on it's website, or published through Kindle's self-publishing service. Like so many other men and women, I was absolutely sickened by this kind of book being available, and even more heartsick that my favorite online retailer was stocking this sick piece of work!
I tweeted and Facebook'd my sentiments and was roiling in a sea of anger, righteous indignation and something very close to hate, for the man behind this book. Then I made the mistake of actually reading an excerpt from the book. That was a huge mistake, especially for someone like me, who has harbored a horrible secret for a long time. A secret that has slowly been killing me because I didn't know how to deal with it. Reading the small passage from the book that I did, was too much. I had to physically step away from the entire situation and take some time to regroup and get control over my emotions before I let them control me.
In the interim, one of my close friends, Kim D., who had been reading my Facebook wall and was just as incensed about this as I was, decided to start a group on Facebook calling for the Boycott of Amazon. It immediately drew a couple of thousand members and in 24 hours it now has a base of 13,000+ members. Kim emailed me and asked me if I wouldn't mind lending my voice in support of her efforts and asked me to join the page administrative group and then asked if I'd be willing to use my voice and write about this issue and help her spread the word and to assist her in acting as the mouthpiece of the group.
If I'm being honest, I didn't exactly know what I was in for when I jumped at the chance to help someone who is not only a close friend, but fellow mom, consumer and concerned citizen. I didn't know that I would spend the day fielding calls and emails from the media, dealing with people who are unable to voice their objection to our movement in an adult and civilized manner and eventually have to put up with people looking up my personal information and phoning me at home and threatening me and my children.
All of that aside, now that I'm "broken in" and used to the pace, I can honestly say that I'd do it all over again. As I walked past Gaby's bedroom tonight and watched her sleep, I knew the message that I was trying to help spread, was the right thing for me and my family. You might not agree with Kim and I and the 13,000+ other people who agree with us and were equally as disgusted as we were about this book, but that is the great thing about America. We have the right to have differing opinions and to express those opinions and act on them.
You are damned right when you say this about free speech! As much as Amazon has a right to free speech, and to protect what they view as the free speech of their authors who self-publish via Kindle, as Americans we have a right to boycott a retailer who sells something we view as objectionable and as a means to promote the most heinous of crimes against those who are most vulnerable...our children. You don't have to agree with what we're doing, but please bear in mind, we have EVERY right to do it. Freedom of Speech goes both ways!
The other very obvious issue here is Amazon's own very contradictory message they seem to be sending out. They adamantly oppose stifling anyone else's freedom of speech, yet by their very own content guidelines, the author of the book is in direct violation of both of them! This has been pointed out numerous times by national news media outlets and most recently by Anderson Cooper from CNN. As Cooper pointed out, Amazon has flip-flopped on this several times, then finally pulled the book, but is refusing to talk to a single entity from the media about this. I wonder why?
Finally, it's nice to see that intelligent people can have rational discussions about this while disagreeing with one another. If anything, I'm grateful for the dialogue this event has started and hope that we can keep it going on a civil and humane basis.
Personally, I do understand why so many people feel Amazon should never have pulled the book. I spoke with two attorney's I trust a great deal who gave me a better understanding of why Amazon defended their right to not only sell the book, but the author's right to publish it. However, as I stated earlier, I have a right to spend my money at a retailer who doesn't support or make money off of a pedophile's how-to book!
Kim and I have decided, that due to the impact this movement seems to have made and based on how important this subject is, that we'd like to start a web site devoted more in depth to this issue and others surrounding protecting our children. As soon as we have that set up, I'll list the address out here. I'll also post the links to the various media interviews we've done, out here.
