Take; three cups of depression, 1/3 cup of anger, a cup full of frustration, a heaping tablespoon of worry, and an entire bottle of humidity. Mix thoroughly and you've got yourself a Melancholy Monday. If you're looking for substance in todays post you will be a tad disapointed. This is all fluff and nonsense, baby!
So what's a mama to do? Well if you are a freak like me, you drag out your favourite movies, some music that gets you pumped up, and head out to YouTube to scour the Interwebs for some of your favourite old school TV shows.
Wanna see what I dig when I'm down? Now, be prepared, some of it might shock you! But then I warned you, I am a freak and the mix of things I listen to can only best be described as eclectic.
If you laugh at me, I will know! I will hunt you down and send my vast armies of armed and dangerous dust bunnies after you. There is no escape.
For some reason, I usually find myself watching The Sound of Music in the winter time. But on days like today when all I really want to do is stay in bed and ignore everything, there's just something about this scene from TSoM that makes me smile...
Now if the following little bit o' sunshine and happiness doesn't give you a clue to just how ancient I am, then nothing will. Nothing said fun to me like kicking back and watching Sigmund and the Seamonsters. OK so perhaps I had a little thing for Johnny Whitaker too...
I'd love to get the Little Imp hooked on Sigmund. It sure beats those damned Doodlebops which kinda freak me out.
Now, if you're my age, then you will probably remember the next little bit of happiness in my freakshow of fun. Oh and apologies in advance if this clip gives you ear worms...
Nothing said lovin like Sid and Marty Croft creations that resembled a hip acid trip. Not that I'd know anything about acid. Really!
If all else fails and none of the above manage to pull me out from under the covers, this next clip is almost always guaranteed to have me on the floor. As I was sitting here watching it this morning, be still my heart, the Little Imp was giggling as well! Houston, I think we have an I Love Lucy fan! This has to be the funniest ever bit on an episode of I Love Lucy! It rocks!
Of course, I can't sit around watching the same I Love Lucy episode forty two times in a row. Although, I probably have once or twice. One of my favourite movies from the last twenty years is Parenthood. Yep, the one with Steve Martin and Keanu Reeves. It's funny, sweet, a bit sad at times, and I get to oggle Keanu Reeves. 'Nuff said!
My other indulgence of the boob tube variety when I'm feeling less than ideal has to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the TV series, NOT the original movie. Who doesn't love a little James Marsters, David Boreanaz, and Seth Green? As a silly aside, I've started to watch Bones just to get my fix of David Boreanaz. It's actually pretty good, but I can't help expecting him to get his vampire game on at a moment's notice!
One of my favourite episodes of Buffy had to be the musical. At first I thought it was silly and a wee bit embarrasing. But like so much moss on the side of a tree in deepest Alabama, it grew on me. Here's one of my favourites, featuring Spike, from that episode...
Oh and to show you how truly pathetic I am, I bought the soundtrack for that episode. Good thing I am married to a man who was just as enamoured of the series as I was/am. Yes, we do own the series on DVD...Angel too!
If plugging myself into the boob-tube or PC doesn't hit the spot, I will resort to music. After all, music has pretty much ruled my world since I was kid. I used to sneak my dad's Led Zeppelin albums (remember those round vinyl things? No? Didn't think you would) and blast Stairway to Heaven on the Hi-Fi before school in the mornings after the 'rents had left for work. Oh hey dad, didn't know about that did you? You did? I'll be damned. And here I thought I was so careful putting the records back exactly where I got them and making sure I'd turned the volume back down to non-sonic boom levels.
My love of music runs long and deep and varied. Remember how I said I was eclectic? Yeah well that's probably an understatement of monumental proportions when it comes to music. It's probably a good thing that I am down with so many genres of music because back in the day when Clear Channel had me on the air all over the place, it was never at the same format station. Country, Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Eighties, and even talk radio. I was not only all over the mad geographically, but musically. So it's a good thing I'm pretty flexible. I think the only format I would not have gone over well in was Classical, which is sad because I love classical music.
Now my luvlies, keep in mind that I have warned you. My tastes run the gamut from...well just have a look-see/listen for yourselves and if your eyes aren't bleeding and ears aren't ringing, then leave me a comment (for the love of God, show me some love!!! *lol*) with a link to some of your favourite things that make you smile, laugh and feel a little bit better when you are suffering from a case of the Summer
By the way, mad props to anyone who can tell me where Rob Zombie got the name "Dragula" for his following track!
Incidentally, yeah, I know Rob Zombie LOOKS kinda freaky and scary, but that's all part of his thing. He has been in my studio three times and he's a perfect gentleman and intelligent as hell! Word!
And lastly, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed from human fingers. Mozart's Requiem, Lacrimosa...
I LOVED Sigmund and the Seamonsters and HR Pufinstuf!! I so wish they were still on tv so MP could watch. Have you seen them anywhere on disc?
Parenthood -- such a sweet movie -- one I could watch over and over and over.
And Dragula ALWAYS reminds me of my brother back in the day. Great song - ha!

MommyPie....sent you an email that will hook you up with where to get them, relatively inexpensively too! I'm thinking of getting them for the Imp. Anything beats the Doodlebops!

Lacrimosa...how perfect. My passing knowledge of some Latin roots made me understand that the song was about weeping. And this was a perfect complement to my post of today. And my current state of being.

Dear Auds, you know what? In the winter I have a problem with depression. Last winter I was sick with the flu. I would flop around on the sofa and not even reach for the remote. Young and Restless came on. I began to wonder if Nicki would marry Victor after their daughter woke up from a coma, while she was pregnant with someone's baby. Victor was worried, but he still fired her after she woke up from the coma. It was enough to drive me to take above average amounts of Robitussin.

Totally can relate to the Melancholy Mondays! My 'puter wont load your videos - I'm really starting to get ticked off at this frickin' computer!
PS. Thanks for commenting on my blog. I know how hard it is with the word verification and all. ;)

Oh my Lord!
I love ALL those vids you posted. We watch the Lonely Goatherd over and over and over again at this house.
Also. Sigmund! And Pufinstuff! I loved my Witchy Poo. I also wish there were re-runs of those shows.
Finally: BUFFY! How I miss ye. Some of the best witty TV writing ever.
It's weird (but comforting) to know that someone shares my eclectic taste!

Awwww... the lonely goatherd. It is cute, isn't it?
Um, I am pretty sure that I have all of the words to 'Once More With Feeling' memorized and embarrass myself by singing them loud in my car.
Posted by: Rachael | Monday, July 21, 2008 at 04:48 PM
Rachael...it's only embarrassing if someone else hears you. And so what if they do. *lol*
SDM...be still my heart! It's RARE to find ANYONE on planet earth who knows what I'm talking about when I say Sigmund and the Seamonsters or HR Puf...Which reminds me, Sleestacks anyone?
Monkeytoe...you are more than welcome. I'm just glad I found you again via MommyPie.
Liz...ditch the Robitussin for the good stuff! Nyquil baby! It makes Robitussin look like water!
Di...Lord can I relate, and how. Must email you soon. Lacrimosa is the perfect accompaniment to my ENTIRE life right about now.

Thanks for the smile after a long, tiring day!
It's amazing what you can find on utube, isn't it?

Simply Shannon...You are very welcome. Yes indeed, YouTube is good company! Sometimes even better than people.

Ah, at last - another Buffy/Angel devotee! It's a measure of my personal insanity that I've seen every episode of Buffy *at least* three times (some much more), plus every episode of Angel (though Season 5 I've watched, like, ten times). My husband and I both love it, and we have both boxed sets. There's nothing quite like a bit of Spike on a dready evening!
Like you, I've just discovered Bones, and love it - but you're right, you do keep expecting DB to whip out the fangs!

I laughed so hard at the Lucy episode. The thing that cheers me up best usually is to get moving (bike ride, hiking, going running) -- though I do love Bones and lots of TV that's not on right now. When I'm low, chocolate, red wine, exercise, or laughing on the phone with friends seem to work best. The most fun I have on YouTube is introducing Son to crazy things like Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling or lego batman saving the day. EVERYTHING is on YouTube. I hope your day is getting better!

Oh my God it's like we're the same person. Except for that HR Pufnstuf thing. But other than that, yesyesyes. I was a huge Buffy fan, Angel, too. Think I've seen every episode at least ten times. Joss Whedon's coming out with a new show called Dollhouse in the fall and if I could set up my Tivo now, I swear I would.
My musical tastes are all over the place, too... my iPod is like an OCD's patient's worst nightmare. Monk would HATE me.

P.S. Have you watched "Burn Notice"? It's my new favorite obsession.
Posted by: bejewell | Monday, July 21, 2008 at 09:55 PM
Beej...Dollhouse? I'm gonna have to look it up as I *pink puffy heart* anything with Joss Whedon's signature on it.
As for Burn Notice...I keep falling asleep during it. The one new show I have gotten into lately is "In Plain Sight"...so far so good. Well except when I fall asleep in the middle of it.
Posted by: Auds at Barking Mad | Monday, July 21, 2008 at 09:59 PM
How can you fall asleep with that Hottie McHottie-Hot on the screen? You have issues.
Dollhouse stars the same girl who played Faith in Buffy. It's gonna fucking ROCK.

Really, Anyone who loves The Sound of Music (I love it so much that I go to the sing-a-long every year) is okay with me.
Hope it cheered you up!

I LOVED that show!

Isn't You-Tube freaking amazing? Thank you for reminding me of Parenthood, that movie was soo good. Here is another that makes me happy: Field of Dreams!!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqgKGtYfr_U

I forgot about Parenthood! Love that movie. My comfort TV is Princess Bride and Shawshank Redemption.

I LOVE Parenthood! I need to watch that one again. Well, as you know from my movie post The 'Burbs is my comfort movie. As for tv, I'd probably say the soaps (Days and General Hospital). You can go years without watching and the same dumb characters will be doing the same dumb things. It is comforting to me.
