I'm certain that this post is not going to earn me Mother of the Year!
It wasn't all that long ago that I loved the musical, The Sound of Music. LOVED IT! I knew all the songs by heart and enjoyed singing them to my little ones over the years. As a matter of fact, I grew up with my musically talented Mommily singing the songs around the house. Mommily has a beautiful voice and I loved hearing her sing.
That was then.
This my luvlies, is NOW...
As far as I am concerned, Julie Andrews and all her tiny little musical minions in the film are evil. The spawn of Satan!
How is it that I have come to hate hearing those first few notes of "The Hills Are Alive with the Sound of Music" ? How can I not fall over in love whilst the little ones sing "The Lonely Goatherd"? Why do my ears bleed when Captain Von Trapp sings "Edelweiss", and dread the droning of "Do Re Mi"?
It's simple really; over the last few weeks I have sat through The Sound of Music no less than 972 times. You see, the Little Imp is so completely and totally enamored of the film and the songs, that we must start and end each day watching The Sound of Music. We must watch it before naps. Before we pee or poop, before we play with Play Doh, and we must certainly sing every bloody song before bed.
I used to think there was no worse ear worm (songs that get horribly, terribly, infinitely stuck in your head) than "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", or the stinkin theme from Barney. I was wrong. So so very wrong. I have come to the conclusion that there is no worse ear worm than "Do Re Mi." At this very moment I am singing the song and considering how tempted I am to stick a knitting needle in my ear.
Is it wrong that I keep praying that the DVD player chokes on the movie sometime soon? Is it so very terrible that I want to fling the DVD from the back deck and shout with glee as it slams into a tree and smashes into a million silvery pieces? Am I a horrible mother because I want to tell the Little Imp that if we watch the movie again the house will blow up...or at the very least, my head will explode, oozing gray matter everywhere?
What I find most ironic are two things...The Little Imp does not call the movie, "The Sound of Music", rather, she refers to it as "Maria." She wants to watch Maria! "Mommy it's time to watch Maria." "I'm singing like Maria, Mommy, watch me!" "Mommy, I can dance like Maria." Maria Maria Maria! You're killin' me! So what do you think the Little Imp's favourite song from the film is? You got it! "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" As I sit here, I have some pretty definite ideas of my own, as far as how to solve a problem like Maria!
I am doomed.
Oh, and don't even get me started on this guy! He's been on the Little Imp's radar lately and I'll have none of it!
Venison anyone?
LOL! My kids went thought an Elmo Saves Christmas phase one summer that seriously made me want to change my name and move away...

Come on, don't hurt Bambi! Not sweet lil' ole' Bambi. Although, I do love a good piece of venison. Beef jerky style please.

I love the Sound of Music--but maybe not that much ;)

LOL! My nephew had a thing for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Kids sure do get obsessed by things, don't they? At our house, it's The Killers. All day, all night. "Mama, I wanna hear Soul Butter. Mama, I wanna hear My Stomach Is Sick (Mr. Brightside, for those not in the know). Mama, can you play the dancer song?"
I am holding on by my fingernails to my love of The Killers, but pretty soon, they're going to go the way of Lilo and Stitch and Toy Story.

Ahhh... I so know your pain. I showed "SOM" at least 4 times a year for 10 years in a row to my 6th graders. My last year teaching 6th grade, I could do all of the movements and dialogue. It was sad. I even have pics of myself in Salzburg with my hand on my head pointing up in the sky like I just sang that last horrible note of "Do Re Mi"... the sad music teacher that I am.. LOL
My little darling has come to love Family Guy, while cuddling in bed with me. Yes, I know its a bad show, but she's quiet for 30 minutes and I get to lay down for that amount of time..

I have never ever seen it! It's almost embarrassing to admit. My sons are down with the Alvin and the Chipmunks soundtrack right now...HELP!!!

I'm certain you WILL be mother of the year. Escecially since you haven't sent that DVD crashing into a tree! Get the Imp a pair of head phones so you don't have to listen to it:)

My daughter watched The Wizard of Oz a thousand times a year for 3 years. I'm still getting over it.

I TOTALLY understand! My best friend in college (and roommate for two years out of the four) LOVED this movie. And Grease. Considering I don't like musicals, it was even more torturous. If I hear even a snippet of a song from either of those movies I cringe!
I'll tell you, though, if The Sound of Music was to capture my daughter's attention the way it has yours, I'd be happy to have it on, cringing and all, since I might actually be able to get something done!

Who does my darling little niece get her obsessiveness from then???????
Love as always.

Oh my, harsh, sweetie, harsh ;-)
Poor Maria and Bambi never hurt anyone in their whole lives . . . but if we're spilling our guts I'm totally over Bob the Builder. I'd like to stick his hammer where the sun doesn't shine . . .

My daughter has a Sound of Music thing too. She made me fast forward to Lonely Goatherd over and over and over and over and over again, and she tells everyone she's a yodeler. Which, may I add, she is NOT, God bless her trying-to-sing heart.

I can handle some things over and over, but I'm fairly certain that The Sound of Music is past that line for me. Gah.

lmao I loved this post - even though I like the Sound of Music still (I'm sure I wouldn't if I'd seen it as many times as you have now!) - and to show my appreciation, I just gave you an award over @ my blog! :) Have a great day!

My 8 and 10 year old girls have a thing for Hannah/ Miley. I could stick her where the sun doesn't shine. I'm so sick of I could spit. High School Musical 1, 2, and 3 are right behind.
What's wring with eating Bambi? A little A1 sauce and a good bottle of Veno. Yum
Thanks for stopping by. I hope to hear from you again.

I went through the same thing with Toy Story many years ago. I just don't understand though why you won't let her watch Bambi, The Deer With a Butterfly Up Its Butt.

Hysterical! I loved the Sound of Music...but in very small doses, like once every 5 years!

Ya know, I'm not sure if I would get sick of Sound of Music. Sure its pretty cheesy but I grew up singing the whole thing, playing the record over and over and over.
Actually my girl likes singing and dancing too - maybe I'll see if she likes it. Gotta be better than Elmo in Grouchland. Actually I don't mind elmo too much, but the older brother HATES it.
Funny how they like to watch the same movie again again again again. At least we're mostly past Teletubbies (which I kind of like too)

I remember the Sound of Music laser disc set very well. MaMoo (new name for Moosey now that she's almost a mama) dropped disc one on the floor and cracked the edge and I took the fall for her. We all know what a klutz I am. She was the one totally enamored of that musical.
Bambi was never allowed in our house. I think we had the disc, but I would not allow it to be played. Same reasoning as "Old Yeller" and other sad animal movies.
Of course, now that she's moved to LV to stay with her mom, I won't be catching Hannah Montana and the other Disney shows at 4 a.m. while I'm trying to sleep in my recliner because she won't let me go upstairs to my own bed when she sleeps over. With Anna it was "Bring It On" that damn cheerleader movie two or three times a visit.
Of course, you could change the tone a little bit and it would only take a little segue; go get a copy of "West Side Story" and you can have Gaby and Richard Beymer singing "Maria, Maria, Maria" for the next three weeks. I'd love to see what Gaby does with the Sharks and the Jets.
But then, you have your musical cross to bear and your dad, well, he's so glad football season is nearly over he can't express his joy.

I'm thanking my lucky stars right now that little boys don't get into SoM, so there is no chance of them ruining it for me. It's still one of my all-time favourite movies. :)
